Republican’ Senator Jeff Flake threatened to support articles of impeachment against President Trump if he does something he doesn’t like. Namely, firing Robert Mueller. Apparently Mueller is now completely untouchable, no matter what he does.
“To remind the president of that is the best way to keep him from going down that road. To fire Mueller without cause, I don’t know if there is any other remedy left to the legislative branch,” said Flake.
“The president needs to be reminded that while there is nothing the House and the Senate can do constitutionally to prevent the president from moving forward, our remedy is on the other side. And the firing of a special prosecutor without cause will, as Lindsey Graham said, prompt that remedy,” said Flake.
“We are begging the president not to fire the special counsel. Don’t create a constitutional crisis. Congress cannot preempt such a firing. Our only constitutional remedy is after the fact, through impeachment. No one wants that outcome. Mr. President, please don’t go there,” said Flake.
Flake also recently claimed he *might* run against President Trump in 2020. “I, as you know, am retiring from the Senate at the end of this year. It has not been my plan to run for president, but I have not ruled it out. I hope that someone does run in the Republican primary – somebody to challenge the president. I think that the Republicans want to be reminded what it means to be a traditional, decent Republican,” said Flake.
